V&A Decode Exhibition

Where art ends and digital begins.

Decode: Digital Design Sensation at the V&A is the new interactive exhibition that is raising the profile of digital design, which is fast becoming the art of this age.
With International artists and designers such as Daniel Brown, Golan Levin, Daniel Rozin, Troika and Karsten Schmidt all displaying interactive, digital designs, this exhibition is an exploration not only in contemporary art but also innovation.

The true potential of each installation is only reached when an interaction is made. For example a life size mechanical eye blinks a second after the viewer blinks. A mirror constructed of woven motorised panels creates a responsive portrait of the person standing in front of it. There is also a unique clock, which has been generated by inviting the public to upload data online, it even has it’s own i-Phone app. so you can continue interacting with it.

Decode has been created by V&A in collaboration with onedotzero and is open from 8th December 09 – 11 April 10

Claire’s Diner

Where the Milkshakes rock and the good times roll.

On Friday, the exposure bar was transformed into a 1950’s diner, to say a fond farewell to our executive PA Claire Arendse, as she jets off back to Australia.
Like a scene from Happy Days, the diner was decked out with monochrome checked floor tiles, faux chrome features and a film screening of the classic, Back to the Future, all that was missing was for Arthur Fonzarelli and the gang to rock up and hang out.
After some tearful speeches, the jukebox jived into action and the authentic American cheeseburgers (freshly delivered from everyone’s favourite take away) were all gobbled up. The blender whizzed up some deliciously boozy (don’t knock it until you’ve tried it) Jack Daniels, peanut butter, maple syrup and ice cream milkshakes. That was until a strange burning smell was followed by a bang and the blender blew up.
But it didn’t ruin the vibe. The doors of Claire’s Diner didn’t close until every last drop was consumed.

Cities in the dark

Good things happen when they’re people-powered.

The grid is down, the oil has run out…
Within our over-populated city we have a sensorial glut that leaves us numb and sedate. There’s too much music, too much light, too much passive screen watching which leaves us over-indulged, slow and ill prepared for the looming dark age that is almost upon us.
Well that was the general premise that led a couple of friends and I to create Cities in the Dark!!

Initially, we set up a series of power-cut parties where the more people who turned up with torches and pedalled, the louder and brighter the event would get. After persuading venues to switch off the power to create a convincing blackout situation, we set up our own bike-powered generators and invite the audience to participate in powering the party for themselves. As well as having strict no torch no entry door policy we encourage a “Human Dynamo” dress code which created a bizarre home-made electrical carnival atmosphere.
One of our crew has links in Uganda so by July this year we were setting up pedal powered cinemas in remote Ugandan villages as well as organising a bike race for the Boda-Boda riders in Kasese (Ugandan bicycle taxis). The race was a big success and looks set to be a much bigger event next year. We’ve shown our film of the race to London couriers to encourage them to join the race next year. Our most recent activity has seen Cities in the Dark entering gallery spaces with a series of people-powered installations and screenings.

So next time the power goes down you know what to do… start pedalling!!

Nessun Dorma and Lavazza

December saw Exposure start working on the digital reputation management for Italy’s leading coffee brand, Lavazza.

The Lavazza annual calendar for 2010 uniquely fuses stunning images shot by top photographer Miles Aldridge with a specially produced song – the iconic Nessun Dorma recorded by Antony (from Antony and the Johnsons), backed by the Roma Sinfonietta Orchestra.

Exposure will tap into the fan bases of Antony, the brand, the orchestra and the
soft-recorded song itself to create a digital groundswell of interest in the brand via this unique musical initiative.

Dr. Martens 50th Anniversary

On Thursday, December 10, Exposure US hosted the Dr. Martens 50th Anniversary Media Dinner.

The media were given a sneak preview of the Dr. Martens 2010 campaign celebrating the anniversary of the iconic footwear brand.
Situated in the famous wine cellar of Il Buco (where Edgar Allen Poe was inspired to write “The Cask Of Amontillado”), guests were treated to an incredible dinner as well as images and a video preview (via iTouch devices at the table).

In addition to Dr. Martens CEO David Suddens and marketing executives Kimberly Barta and Sara LaHaie, guests included editors from The New York Times, Style.com, Harpers Bazaar, Teen Vogue, Details, Interview, Paper, Nylon, Spin and Fader.

Creative Director Tom Phillips and Marketing Director Thomas Renaud were on hand to give a behind-the-scenes report on how the recording and filming sessions are going with the various bands. If the reaction from the editors to the teaser video Tom created is any indication, we have an incredible celebration on our hands.

Bitchin’ stitchin’

Tree- check. Tinsel- check. Twinkling, flashing lights – check.

Ever get that feeling that some offices recycle the same mundane Christmas decorations every twelve months? Not here at Exposure. Adorable Grannies stitching their little hearts out, embroidering cheeky Xmas statements to adorn our reception? – Check.

We’re not just making a statement, we’re embroidering it. Our adopted Granny, taking her rightful place at the heart of our Christmas installation is here to serve up a timely reminder of the warmth that this Yule time season is all about and so much more. We’ve all been feeling the pinch of the recession this year and our Christmas theme very much takes inspiration from this. We thought why not go back to basics this year? After all, we’re already going to try and get away with giving our mums homemade goodies this year so why not embrace this motif in our office decorations. We drew up an idea based on a homemade Christmas and what better exemplifies all that’s wonderful about homemade than the art of decorating fabric with needles and yarn?
In our eyes, embroidery is yet another outlet for creativity and at Exposure we’re always embracing the possibilities of creativity.
Further, our Exposure Gran is gonna be warming our reception with cozy tales of times past, reminding us of how good we have it and just how we’re going to get through this recession over loving mugs of cocoa.

Booze, Beats and the Booth.

The Exposure Christmas party went by in a flash last night down at Inn 1888, with Raoul, Robin and Arran on the Decks.

With a little jagerbombing and mojito mojo the bar bill went up as well as the volume.
Arran, Exposure veteran, was seen sharing the festive cheer with the Westminster Council Noise Policeman who decided to try and gatecrash. Mr Cawte, responsible father of one, and one on the way, tried to defend the ear-splitting volume, by saying “Listen, We’ve all had a drink… ” The fact that he had his arm around the officer at the time proved he was telling the truth.

Top 3 Party Rumours
Rob’s rendition of ‘Feed the world’ will be released as the Christmas number one

Conspiracy theorists went wild as a Tim Bourne impersonator rocked up to deliver a speech. Surely it couldn’t be the real Tim, my mum always said if you’re well enough to go to a party, you’re well enough to go to work.

Woolfy wasn’t at home suffering with flu; he was secretly sat inside the photo booth retouching every photo to make everyone look stunning

Check out his work:
